{"id":13506,"date":"2018-01-04T11:00:46","date_gmt":"2018-01-04T16:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/?p=13506"},"modified":"2021-07-23T13:03:17","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T17:03:17","slug":"palermo-book-of-antidotes-1670","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2018\/01\/04\/palermo-book-of-antidotes-1670\/","title":{"rendered":"Palermo Book of Antidotes, 1670"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Margaret Kaiser ~<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Library has recently acquired a very rare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK518755\/\">pharmacopeia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nicol\u00f2 Gervasi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.nlm.nih.gov\/permalink\/01NLM_INST\/1o1phhn\/alma9917028183406676\"><em>Antidotarium Panormitanum<\/em><\/a> (Palermo book of antidotes) published in Palermo, Italy in 1670, is divided into 30 sections and describes the preparation of a variety of remedies.\u00a0 Most of the remedies are prepared from plants, however, the author also includes sections discussing the medicinal properties of gemstones and minerals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"840\" data-carousel-extra='{"blog_id":1,"permalink":"https:\\\/\\\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\\\/2018\\\/01\\\/04\\\/palermo-book-of-antidotes-1670\\\/","likes_blog_id":"52242398"}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 840px; height: 605px;\" \/> <\/a> <div class=\"tiled-gallery-caption\" itemprop=\"caption description\"> An electuary is a paste containing a medicine which has been mixed in a sweet substance such as honey. <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <!-- close group --> <\/div> <!-- close row --> <\/div>\n<p>The first section of the pharmacopeia deals with electuaries.\u00a0 An electuary is a paste containing a medicine which has been mixed in a sweet substance such as honey.\u00a0 Gervasi describes electuaries made from flowers such as rose, hyacinth, and crocus, spices such as cinnamon, and gemstones including emeralds, sapphires, and rubies.<\/p>\n<p>Gervasi was a botanist and chemist in Sicily and the <em>Antidotarium<\/em> includes sections on a wide variety of medicinal preparations including tinctures, pills, powders, extracts, waters, conserves, infusions, decoctions, syrups, oils, balms, plasters and poultices, and ointments.\u00a0\u00a0 Remedies for fevers, plague, heart problems, catarrh, and many others are provided.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"840\" data-carousel-extra='{"blog_id":1,"permalink":"https:\\\/\\\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\\\/2018\\\/01\\\/04\\\/palermo-book-of-antidotes-1670\\\/","likes_blog_id":"52242398"}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 840px;
