Recently several staff from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) took a field trip over the river and through the woods\u2014well actually across the Beltway\u2014to visit our colleagues at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/\">National Agricultural Library (NAL)<\/a> in Beltsville, Maryland, to learn more about their food-related collections and their exciting work in the areas of \u00a0digitization, access, and preservation.<\/p>\n<p>NLM and NAL are two of the five national libraries in the United States, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ntl.bts.gov\/ntl\">National Transportation Library<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/ncee\/projects\/nle\/\">National Library of Education<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/\">Library of Congress<\/a>. NLM and NAL both trace their beginnings to the 19th century.\u00a0 In fact, our histories are as similar as siblings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both libraries began as departmental offices. NAL was established in 1862 as the U.S. Department of Agriculture Library when President Lincoln signed the Organic Act while NLM began in 1836 as the Library of the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, only 26 years apart.<\/li>\n<li>Both libraries moved several times over the next 100 years or so as collections grew.<\/li>\n<li>Official \u201cNational\u201d designations came only 6 years apart. In 1956 the National Library of Medicine became a national library and part of the Public Health Service under the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. NAL followed in 1962 as a national library under the Department of Agriculture.<\/li>\n<li>And our current buildings were both built in Maryland in the 1960s, NAL in 1969 and NLM in 1962.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"840\" data-carousel-extra='{"blog_id":1,"permalink":"https:\\\/\\\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\\\/2017\\\/11\\\/22\\\/field-trip-nlm-visits-the-national-agricultural-library\\\/","likes_blog_id":"52242398"}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 840px; Among them were those of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211202163106\/https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/speccoll\/collectionsguide\/collection2.php?search=coville\">Frederick Coville<\/a>, botanist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, who was one of the first to develop blueberries that could be sold commercially. We also learned about selections from NAL\u2019s extensive collection of over 200,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/specialcollections.nal.usda.gov\/guide-collections\/henry-g-gilbert-nursery-and-seed-trade-catalog-collection\">nursery and seed trade catalogs<\/a>. These catalogs date from the late 1700s through present day and document the costs of seeds over time, the introduction of seeds, and gardening and farming trends. Our tour with Susan and Amy concluded with a discussion about several beautiful pieces of art including a replica of a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211011002647\/https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/speccoll\/collectionsguide\/collection2.php?search=smokey\">Smokey Bear<\/a> painting and several rare drawings of plant specimens.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"840\" data-carousel-extra='{"blog_id":1,"permalink":"https:\\\/\\\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\\\/2017\\\/11\\\/22\\\/field-trip-nlm-visits-the-national-agricultural-library\\\/","likes_blog_id":"52242398"}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 840px; We were especially excited about this as we continue our work at NLM to ensure that our own facilities remain state-of-the art as our institution moves into its third century. For example, both institutions hold historic <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.nlm.nih.gov\/?f%5Bdrep2.format%5D%5B%5D=Manuscript+text&q=recipe&utf8=%E2%9C%93\">recipe books<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211011002700\/https:\/\/www.nal.usda.gov\/speccoll\/collectionsguide\/collection2.php?search=cookbook+meyer\">cookbooks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/category\/series\/curious-herbals\/\">herbals<\/a>, and other materials related to nutrition. In addition, we are undertaking complementary activities like digitizing our collections, making them publicly accessible, creating controlled vocabularies to enable indexing and retrieval of information, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/mesh\/\">Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)<\/a> \u00a0here at NLM, and, at our colleagues\u2019 institution, the <a href=\"https:\/\/agclass.nal.usda.gov\/\">NAL Thesaurus<\/a>, and developing methods\u2014drawing from the expertise of multiple disciplines\u2014to collect, curate, preserve, and provide access to data sets.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to our colleagues at NAL for meeting with us and sharing their experience and expertise.
