<p><span class="h4">Type of program:</span> Social insurance and social assistance system.</p>

<p><span class="h4">Social insurance:</span> Employed and self-employed persons, including apprentices.</p>
<p>Voluntary coverage for previously insured persons with at least two years of contributions.</p>

<p><span class="h4">Social assistance:</span> Elderly or disabled residents of Saint Kitts and Nevis.</p>

<p>The minimum monthly orphan's pension is <abbr class="spell">EC</abbr>$103.20.</p>
<p><span class="h4">Dependent parent's pension:</span> Up to 16.7% of the maximum family survivor pension is paid.</p>

<p>The maximum family survivor pension is 100% of the <span class="nobr">old-age</span> or disability pension the deceased received or was entitled to receive.</p>

<p><span class="h4">Cash sickness benefits:</span>&nbsp;Must be younger than age&nbsp;62, be employed the day before the incapacity began, and have at least 26&nbsp;weeks of paid contributions including eight in the 13&nbsp;weeks before the incapacity began.</p>
<p><span class="h4">Cash maternity benefits:</span> Must have at least 39&nbsp;weeks of paid contributions, including 20&nbsp;weeks in the 39&nbsp;weeks preceding the six weeks before the expected date of childbirth or the week in which the claim is made, whichever is later.</p>
<p><span class="h4">Maternity grant:</span> Paid to an insured woman or the wife of an insured man with at least 39&nbsp;weeks of paid contributions, including 20&nbsp;weeks in the 39&nbsp;weeks preceding the six weeks before the expected date of childbirth or the week in which the claim is made, whichever is later.</p>
<h3>Sickness and Maternity Benefits</h3>
<p><span class="h4">Sickness benefit:</span> The daily benefit is 65% of the insured's average weekly covered earnings divided by six and is paid for up to 26&nbsp;weeks. The benefit is paid retroactively from the first day if the incapacity lasts for four or more days.</p>
<p><span class="h4">Maternity benefit:</span> The daily benefit is 65% of the insured's average weekly covered earnings divided by six and is paid for 13&nbsp;weeks, beginning up to six weeks before the expected date of childbirth.</p>
<p><span class="h4">Maternity grant:</span> A lump sum of <abbr class="spell">EC</abbr>$450 is paid for each birth.</p>

<p>Constant-attendance supplement: Paid if the insured is assessed with a total disability and requires the constant attendance of others to perform daily functions. The supplement should meet the reasonable cost of care.</p>
<p>Partial disability: For an assessed degree of disability of at least 20%, a percentage of the full pension is paid according to the assessed degree of disability. For an assessed degree of less than 20%, a lump sum is paid.</p>
<h3>Workers' Medical Benefits</h3>
<p>Benefits include the reimbursement of reasonable expenses for medical, surgical, dental, hospital, and nursing care; medicine; appliances; and transportation.</p>
<h3>Survivor Benefits</h3>
<p><span class="h4">Spouse's&nbsp;pension:</span> 50% of the permanent total disability pension the deceased received or was entitled to receive is paid to the <span class="nobr">widow(er).</span></p>
<p><span class="h4">Orphan's pension:</span> Up to 16.7% of 75% of the deceased's average weekly earnings is paid to each child younger than age&nbsp;16 (age&nbsp;18 if a <span class="nobr">full-time</span> student, no limit if disabled).</p>
<p><span class="h4">Dependent parent's pension:</span> Up to 16.7% of the maximum family survivor pension is paid to each parent.</p>
<p>The maximum family survivor pension is 100% of the permanent total disability pension the deceased received or was entitled to receive.</p>
<p><span class="h4">Funeral grant:</span> If the insured's death was the result of a work-related injury, a lump sum of <abbr class="spell">EC</abbr>$4,000 is paid to the person who paid for the funeral.</p>
<h3>Administrative Organization</h3>
<p>Ministry of Nevis Affairs, Labour, Social Security, and Ecclesiastical Affairs provides general supervision.</p>
<p>Social Security Board (<a href="https://socialsecurity.kn/">http://www.socialsecurity.kn</a>) administers the program.</p>

<h3>Regulatory Framework</h3>
<p>Labor law (1986) requires employers to provide severance pay to employees with at least one year of continuous service. Severance is paid in cases of certified illness or disability that has lasted for at least three months and is likely to be permanent, redundancy, death of the employer that results in cessation of business operations, and liquidation or bankruptcy. The benefit is one week's pay for at least three months but less than one year of service, two weeks for at least one year but less than five years, three weeks for at least five years but less than 10&nbsp;years, four weeks for at least 10&nbsp;years but less than 15&nbsp;years, and eight weeks for at least 15&nbsp;years of service. (For employees paid monthly, one month's pay for less than 15&nbsp;years; two months for at least 15&nbsp;years.)</p>
