Hi, Sheila. Thanks for visiting our blog. To qualify for spouse’s benefits, your spouse must be receiving retirement or disability benefits. Keep in mind that if you qualify for your own benefits and for benefits as a spouse, we always pay your own benefits first. If your benefits as a spouse are higher than your own benefits, you will get a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse benefit. Visit our Retirement Benefits Planner for more information. We hope this helps.

Hi, Mimi. Anyone age 12 or older requesting an original Social Security number (SSN) must appear in person for an interview. We will ask for evidence to show that your grandson does not have an SSN. Social Security offices are currently open only for in-person appointments for limited, critical situations. We are unable to accept walk-in visitors. If you feel you have a critical situation, please visit our Coronavirus (COVID-19) page. We continue to provide help in our offices by appointment only. In early April, local Social Security offices plan to add more in-person appointments and will again offer in-person service for people without an appointment. We have not set an exact date in April. Visit How to Get Help from Social Security to learn more, including what to know if you need to visit an office. We hope this helps.

I would like to help my 16 year old grandson get a first time SS card/number. I am the custodial grandparent and I am reading on the website that this age group must obtain an in-person appointment, with documents, to complete this process. I can't get anyone to answer the phone while being on hold for hours so that I can make the appointment. The SSA office voice message clearly states that calls are taken in the order they are received but at some point, while on hold, I am told to call back.
