Phase stabilization with single photon detection for quantum networks

Abstract

Maintaining stable phases in interferometric systems and optical links is pivotal for the functionality of diverse quantum communication protocols. However, conventional phase stabilization methods use classical optical signals that may corrupt quantum signals propagating in the same optical fiber link because of the crosstalk. Here we demonstrate experimentally successful phase stabilization of over a 120 km deployed optical communication link connecting distant metropolitan-scale locations, achieved through the use of faint coherent optical pulses and single-photon detection. To avoid the crosstalk we use faint light optical phase reference signal producing less than 1 million photon detections per second at a single-photon detector. We investigate phase noise characteristics and performance of the phase stabilization method using optical fiber spools of different lengths and demonstrate interferometric visibility of over 90 % with single-photon detection for up to 50 km fiber spools. By implementing a stabilization strategy with a 50 % duty cycle time division multiplexing, we enable quantum payloads to coexist within the same communication channel without background noise.
