Important public-health issues are conveyed to children in coloring books in a way that can transform an unpleasant subject into an engaging learning opportunity. For instance, it is uncommon to associate the word “cute” with “lice,” however the <em>The Latest Greatest Coloring Book About Lice<\/em>, a collection item in the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) historical Prints & Photographs collection, achieves such a feat. They are called NITS and are very, very small.<\/p>\n\" data-image-caption=\"<p>Pages 1-2 of NPA’s The Latest Greatest Coloring Book About Lice, 1985\u20132000<\/p>\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/lice_1-2.png?fit=300%2C210&ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/lice_1-2.png?fit=840%2C587&ssl=1\" class=\"wp-image-10139 size-large\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000;\" title=\"Cute Cartoon Lice\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/lice_1-2.png?resize=650%2C455&ssl=1\" alt=\"Two illustrations show cartoon lice moving things into a moving van and gluing eggs to strands of hair.\" width=\"650\" height=\"455\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pages 1\u20132 of NPA’s <em>The Latest Greatest Coloring Book About Lice<\/em>, ca. 2000<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.headlice.org\/kids\/coloring.htm\">downloadable coloring book<\/a> is an example of what has become a popular health-education tool for children used by organizations to teach everything from proper eating habits to what to expect during hospital stays.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\">The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)<\/a> encourages children to be “healthy heroes” with their coloring book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/healthequity\/index.htm\">Express Your Health<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montefiore.org\/\">Montefiore Medical Center’s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montefiore.org\/documents\/healingarts\/coloringpages\/ColorBookPages-All.pdf\">Coloring Fun for Healthy Kids<\/a><\/em>, Dr. Owl leads its readers through a series of illustrations of physically active fruits and vegetables to impress upon them the importance of healthy eating.\u00a0 A drawing of an angry germ on the cover of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjude.org\/treatment\/patient-resources\/caregiver-resources\/infection-tips\/wash-your-hands-to-keep-germs-away\/handwashing-coloring-book.html\">Spread the Word About Handwashing and Not the Germ<\/a><\/em> coloring book, available from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stjude.org\/\">St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital<\/a>, introduces children to the importance of good hygiene. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">The National Institutes of Health (NIH)<\/a> publishes coloring books spanning numerous health topics including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltadental.com\/us\/en\/protect-my-smile\/overall-health\/diet---nutrition-for-oral-health\/the-importance-of-calcium.html\">importance of calcium for healthy development<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/kids.niehs.nih.gov\/activities\/coloring\/index.htm\">environmental issues<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfid.org\/resource\/are-you-a-flu-fighter-coloring-book\/\">understanding the flu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Medical treatment is stressful for everyone, especially children who are subject to fear and anxiety brought about by intimidating environments and unfamiliar situations. Hospitals provide coloring books to their young patients to assist in familiarizing them with what they will experience. The NIH produces a guidebook for what children can expect when admitted to the NIH Clinical Center (a modern version of the coloring book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/736x\/b6\/9a\/f7\/b69af7aaa504aeb79fb14eeffc374cb4.jpg\">The Friendly Clinical Center<\/a><\/em> produced in 1961 to introduce children to the research hospital). The <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/children\/clinical_services\/child_life_program\/\">Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy Department at UC Davis distributes a coloring book<\/a> to patients that explains the possible reasons they were admitted, and introduces them to medical professionals, equipment, and examination rooms. Complex radiology procedures are simplified in the “<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chp.edu\/our-services\/radiology\/coloring-book\">Adventure Series<\/a>” coloring books, created by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chp.edu\/our-services\/radiology\/our-approach\">Department of Pediatric Radiology at Children\u2019s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC<\/a> in collaboration with General Electric. And on the topic of Zika, the Alabama Department of Public Health released the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adph.org\/mosquito\/assets\/ZikaColoringBookEnglish.pdf\">Skeeter Beaters<\/a><\/em> coloring book, for children in pre-K through third grade, encouraging them to join the “Alabama Zika Virus Swat Team” and prevent the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"title prod_detail\">Recently, coloring books have broken through the generational barrier as illustrated by the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2015\/11\/sorry-benedict-cumberbatch-your-head-is-fine\/414010\/\">popularity<\/a> of coloring books for adults.\u00a0 Aside from simply the fun involved in the activity, there has been much public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/adult-coloring-books-are-not-just-a-fad-for-some-they-are-a-lifesaver\/2016\/05\/02\/47449320-f8c2-11e5-a3ce-f06b5ba21f33_story.html\">discussion<\/a> about the health benefits of coloring for adults. The book is free and available for download on the Library’s website.
