Gould<br \/><em><a href=\"http:\/\/resource.nlm.nih.gov\/101416985\">National Library of Medicine #101416985<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On May 2, 1898, a small group of U.S. and Canadian physicians and librarians met in the offices of the <em>Philadelphia Medical Journal<\/em> to form what is now the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlanet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medical Library Association<\/a> (MLA).\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/findingaids.nlm.nih.gov\/repositories\/4\/resources\/580\">George Milbry Gould<\/a>, MD, editor of the <em>Journal<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/library\/branches\/osler\/charlton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Margaret Ridley Charlton<\/a>, medical librarian at McGill University, and <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.nlm.nih.gov\/spotlight\/gf\/\">Sir William Osler<\/a>, then at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC226350\/\">three prime movers<\/a> in establishing the new association, although Osler did not attend that first meeting. Dr. Gould was unanimously elected the first President.
