I grew up in a neighborhood in the vicinity of Seoul, designed as a planned city with a government complex. My childhood was full of questions and curiosity about life and myself that I couldn’t answer at such at a young age. I had always wanted to figure out all those questions in my mind—my brain. I assume that this is the reason why I am still hovering around related subjects, such as mental health, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and so forth. I went to the U.S. for my PhD degree in U.S. History. After completing my degree, I came back to Korea, where I am currently doing both teaching and research.

Typically, I start my workday with my children, twin boys, preparing their breakfast. My real workday begins after they go to kindergarten. I have two courses to teach this semester, so I go in to my office regularly. Other than teaching tasks, I usually do research and do some required work for the institute that I am now working for, the Ewha Institute of History.

CN: What initially sparked your interest in the History of Medicine?

NL: My initial interest was in how we human beings have acted, and what the causes of the actions could be. My doctoral thesis was on the famous Dr. Benjamin Spock and his book, The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, which is full of psychoanalytic understanding of the initial relationship between human beings, mother and child. And my underlying research question was how we interacted with each other psychologically in the first place. He was the right example for me to investigate that initial relationship. Since Dr. Spock was a pediatrician who had been seeking the well-being of children, especially the psychological well-being, I eventually ended up studying the history of well-being in mental health now.

CN: Your talk, “In the Pursuit of Mental Well-being: Robert H. After World War II, the realization that the country was in danger with unhealthy mental conditions paved the road to collaborative effort to establish more systematic care of mental health. Especially, pertinent for the realization was the absence of an extensive and systematic policy or plan for the public mental health was the main source. Dr. Felix began his career with The U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in the 1930s and was the person who best understood the direction of public health policy at the time because he had a career under the Department of Health during World War II. During this time, most psychiatric specialists had experience with state psychiatric hospitals or running private clinics. In contrast, Felix, thanks to his career at an agency under the Public Health Administration, was one of those who knew better than anyone else the need to improve existing mental health laws that would determine the big framework for policy direction after World War II.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="42782" data-permalink="https://circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/2024/11/01/robert-h-felix-and-his-role-in-the-establishment-of-mental-health-in-america/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?fit=805%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="805,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta=\
" data-image-title="nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="
NIMH Research Opens Windows Into the Brain, ca. 1980s
National Library of Medicine #101453525

" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?fit=201%2C300&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?fit=687%2C1024&ssl=1" class="size-medium wp-image-42782" src="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?resize=201%2C300&ssl=1" alt="A poster promoting the National Institute of Mental Health" width="201" height="300" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?resize=201%2C300&ssl=1 201w, https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?resize=687%2C1024&ssl=1 687w, https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?resize=768%2C1145&ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/nlm_nlmuid-101453525-img.jpg?w=805&ssl=1 805w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px" />
NIMH Research Opens Windows Into the Brain, ca. 1980s
National Library of Medicine #101453525

Since the mid-20th century, mental health policies have aimed to create an environment completely different from the existing system, including an in-depth academic understanding of mental disease, and the need for training medical personnel based on that understanding.
