These sites plan and present enriching and engaging programs to connect their communities with the information in the exhibitions and with the wide variety of publicly-available NLM resources. This series, <a href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/category\/series\/making-exhibition-connections\/\">Making Exhibition Connections<\/a> invites host venues to share their partnerships, programs, and public engagement experiences with <\/em>Circulating Now<em> readers. Today<\/em><em>, <\/em><em>Amanda Dinscore,\u00a0<\/em><em>College of Professional Studies Librarian at the Cal Poly Humboldt University Library tells us about hosting <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/makingaworldofdifference\/index.html\">Making a World of Difference: Stories About Global Health<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Circulating Now:<\/strong> Tell us about yourself and your institution. Where are you located? What is your mission? Who do you serve?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amanda Dinscore: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humboldt.edu\/\">Cal Poly Humboldt<\/a> is a small state university on the north coast of California, about 300 miles north of San Francisco and 50 miles south of the Oregon border. Approximately 6,000 students attend the university and have the opportunity to live and study in the incredible natural beauty of the area, including our many beaches and ancient redwood forests. From the start, the program directors welcomed me by inviting me to conduct library orientations and workshops, but the opportunity to host an NLM exhibition presented an entirely new way of engaging with their students, faculty, and the local community. We applied for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/makingaworldofdifference\/index.html\"><em>Making a World of Difference: Stories About Global Health<\/em><\/a> exhibition because it had clear connections to the nursing curriculum. Thanks to the willingness of the nursing program directors to try something new, we were able to work together to extend the theme of the exhibition in several ways, including engaging students in creating health-related public service announcements (PSAs) using NLM resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CN:<\/strong> How did you connect with your community through the exhibition?<\/p>\n<p><strong>AD: <\/strong>Coincidentally, our library\u2019s press had recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/press.humboldt.edu\/BettyChinn\"><em>The Gray Bird Sings: The Extraordinary Life of Betty Kwan Chinn<\/em><\/a> (ebook freely available via link). Betty and her decades of work caring for Humboldt\u2019s unhoused population are well known here, especially amongst local social service and health care workers. With a small university grant, we were able to purchase 350 copies of her biography and distribute them to local nurses and other health care workers. Inside each book, we included stickers with a QR code directing recipients to a <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.humboldt.edu\/NLMGlobalHealth\">website<\/a> where we advertised the exhibition, a library display of local archival materials related to the exhibition theme, and a book discussion that we hosted with Betty Kwan Chinn and the book\u2019s author, Karen Price. On the website, we also shared the PSA videos that the students created and an online form where community members could vote on their favorite video. The top three most popular PSAs were awarded cash prizes, also made possible by the university grant. The PSA project, in which students worked in groups to write, direct, and film their own public service announcements (PSAs) connected to the exhibition theme and using NLM health information, was somewhat complex as it was an assignment with due dates and criteria that needed to be met at certain times. We had the traveling exhibition on loan from April 8\u2013May 18, 2024 and planned our local display and events for that period of time. To extend the content of the exhibition, I created a library display highlighting local connections to health advocacy, entitled <em>Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Stories About Global Health in Humboldt County,<\/em> with profiles of local organizations including United Indian Health Services, Open Door, and the Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation, as well as historical materials on these organizations from our library archives. This display unfortunately had a limited audience due to the campus closure (which began the evening after I put up the display), but it remained up throughout the summer. We also had to find alternate venues for our book discussion and other events. Thankfully, the exhibition banners were easy to take down and set up again. They were on display in three different locations during our loan period!<\/p>\n<p><strong>CN: <\/strong>Did hosting the exhibition encourage research in or use of your own collection?<\/p>\n<p><strong>AD: <\/strong>Our plan was to encourage use of our archival collections as described above, but this was cut short due to the campus closure. However, as a librarian new to the area, it was incredibly educational to comb through our collections and discover the history of how some of our local health organizations have developed over time. Many began as grassroots, community driven organizations that have continued to grow and have come to be relied upon in a county that has been historically underserved.
