As vaccination rates rise in our region, NLM’s collection of COVID-19 visual materials also continues to grow steadily.<\/p>\n<p>Seen above is the cover of<em><a href=\"https:\/\/read.marvel.com\/#\/labelbook\/56132?smartpanel=1\"> The Vitals: True Nurse Stories<\/a>, <\/em>an award-winning digital comic book published in December 2020 by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/articles\/comics\/marvel-and-ahn-team-up-to-celebrate-nurses\"> Marvel Comics<\/a> in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahn.org\/health-care-professionals\/specialties\/nursing\/marvel-the-vitals-nursing-heroes.html\">Allegheny Health Network (AHN)<\/a> to honor their nurses who worked on the front lines during the height of the pandemic in Western Pennsylvania. The description for the print on his website includes the phrase, “this is for the front-liners.”<\/p>\n<p>Finding ways to explain illnesses to children can be challenging and one creative format for doing so is with coloring books. NLM has several in the collection that address health topics including <a href=\"http:\/\/resource.nlm.nih.gov\/101728326\">AIDS<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/resource.nlm.nih.gov\/101578873\">pediculosis<\/a>. This is one example of an item that earned controversy and confusion over its politicized infographic of a mountain.<\/p>\n<p>One of the more <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/cuomo-pandemic-poster-decoded-1894782\">interesting commentaries<\/a> on the poster comes in the form of a dissection of sorts from an artist, where the author describes elements of the infographic from both an historical and modern day perspective to put the graphic in context.<\/p>\n<p>Many articles were also written discussing the poster from a purely political perspective, each containing <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2020\/07\/behold-governor-cuomos-covid-19-mountain-poster.html\">mixed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/dept-of-design\/andrew-cuomos-pandemic-poster-and-the-limits-of-coronavirus-visuals\">negative <\/a>opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the feature image at the top of this post is a snapshot of an <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.library.si.edu\/blog\/2012\/06\/01\/what-is-an-artists-book\/\">artist book<\/a>.\u00a0 It is one of several items created by book artist Maria Pisano and recently acquired by NLM.
