height: 426px;\" \/> <\/a> <div class=\"tiled-gallery-caption\" itemprop=\"caption description\"> Digitalis in A Curious Herbal by Elizabeth Blackwell, 1737 <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <!-- close group --> <\/div> <!-- close row --> <\/div>\n<p>The group also learned about Marshall Nirenberg\u2019s Nobel Prize and <a href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2014\/09\/16\/preserving-nirenbergs-genetic-code-chart\/\">Genetic Code Chart<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fdanj.nlm.nih.gov\/\">FDA Notices of Judgement database<\/a> and the variety of resources available in <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.nlm.nih.gov\/\">NLM Digital Collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the morning was a presentation by John Parascandola, PhD, Congress Program Chair, former Chief, History of Medicine Division (1983\u20131992), and author of <em>King of Poisons: a History of Arsenic<\/em> (Potomac Books, 2012), on a selection of historical pharmaceutical materials from the collections.\u00a0 Attendees enjoyed viewing <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.nlm.nih.gov\/bookviewer?PID=nlm:nlmuid-9412223-bk#page\/416\/mode\/thumb\">hand-colored depictions<\/a> of the male and female mandragora (mandrakes) in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2015\/07\/09\/medieval-herbals-in-movable-type\/\">Gart der Gesundheit<\/a><\/em> (<em>Garden of Health<\/em>) (Mainz, 28 Mar. 1485), and were intrigued to see original <a href=\"http:\/\/resource.nlm.nih.gov\/101461410\">pharmaceutical postcards<\/a>, prints, and <a href=\"http:\/\/resource.nlm.nih.gov\/101439066\">posters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Parascandola and NLM staff also showed the group the 1st edition of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/resource.nlm.nih.gov\/2567001R\">U.S. Pharmacopoeia<\/a><\/em> (Washington, DC, 1820), which will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its publication next year, and Carl Wilhelm Scheele\u2019s <em>Chemische Abhandlung von der Luft und dem Feuer<\/em> <em>(Chemical Investigation of Air and Fire<\/em>) (Uppsala, 1777), which details his discovery of oxygen.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"840\" data-carousel-extra='{"blog_id":1,"permalink":"https:\\\/\\\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\\\/2019\\\/09\\\/19\\\/hosting-the-congress-for-the-history-of-pharmacy\\\/","likes_blog_id":"52242398"}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 840px;
