Kennedy<\/a> set for the nation in 1961 to land a man on the moon, and safely return him to Earth before the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>Since its creation in 1958, NASA\u2019s scientific and technological accomplishments have not only increased our knowledge of the universe but also led to much <a title=\"NLM's Circulating Now\" href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2014\/07\/18\/invasion-from-mars-microbes\/\">medical research<\/a> and many improvements in life both on earth and in space. Today, NASA continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/funder\/nasa\/\">fund<\/a> and conduct cutting-edge research.<\/p>\n<p>Among a wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2015\/05\/05\/nasa-collection-received\/\">collection of materials<\/a> the National Library of Medicine acquired from NASA in 2014 are a number of reports including the <em>Apollo 11 Preliminary Science Report<\/em> (Washington D.C., 1969).\u00a0 Studies on health and safety issues during long-duration missions in space, as well as materials on the International Space Station (ISS) are also included.\u00a0 NIH and NASA have a history of <a href=\"https:\/\/ncats.nih.gov\/alliances\/nasa\">collaboration <\/a>which began in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/gemini\/index.html\">Project Gemini<\/a> era of early human spaceflight in the 1960s and continues today as we look for opportunities to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/blog\/2018\/12\/06\/hhs-and-nasa-team-up-to-explore-health-on-earth-and-in-outer-space.html\">encourage and facilitate space-related health research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"840\" data-carousel-extra='{"blog_id":1,"permalink":"https:\\\/\\\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\\\/2019\\\/07\\\/18\\\/lunar-landing-the-50-year-anniversary\\\/","likes_blog_id":"52242398"}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 840px; They explored the moon\u2019s surface while Michael Collins remained with the command module in lunar orbit.
