Although it began in 1836, the NLM has only been located in Bethesda since 1961, when <a href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2017\/07\/27\/new-history-of-the-nlm-a-new-name-and-a-new-home\/\">a new building<\/a> was built for the library. So, who was there first?<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the first European explorations, what is now Bethesda was a heavily forested area with a stream. Native Americans were present in the area, traveling and hunting, though no known Native American settlements existed precisely where NLM sits today.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 18th century, the land was made part of <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Es5LLvQ_M4sC&pg=PA33&lpg=PA33&dq=thomas+fletchall+maryland+1715&source=bl&ots=d_959FtjBq&sig=ACfU3U3m1SutJilclynM2iyUQpbYdOjLuQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj-zbfDz97gAhWBTt8KHVBgBtwQ6AEwAnoECAcQAQ#v=onepage&q=thomas%20fletchall%20maryland%201715&f=false\">two landgrants<\/a> to Thomas Fletchall in 1715 and by 1783 most of the land had been cleared, probably for tobacco farming.<\/p>\n<p>The land was then owned by Robert Peter, one of the wealthiest men in Montgomery County and the first mayor of Georgetown. Robert\u2019s son, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehousehistory.org\/the-builders-of-tudor-place\">Thomas<\/a>, married <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/library\/digitalhistory\/digital-encyclopedia\/article\/martha-parke-custis-peter\/\">Martha Parke Custis<\/a>, the granddaughter of Martha Washington. Their Georgetown home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tudorplace.org\/\">Tudor Place<\/a>, still stands.<\/p>\n<p>In 1873, Thomas and Martha\u2019s granddaughter, Martha Custis Kennon, along with her husband and second cousin, Armistead Peter, inherited the Bethesda land and built a summer home called Winona on this site. One son, Beverley Kennon Peter, inherited the house and the surrounding 116 acres. Another son, George Freeland Peter, built a summer home on his part of the inherited land in 1930. That structure is now called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fic.nih.gov\/About\/Pages\/stonehouse-history.aspx\">Stone House<\/a> and is a part of NIH, housing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fic.nih.gov\/Pages\/Default.aspx\">Fogarty International Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the mid-nineteenth century the families of three brothers, Joseph, Madison, and Henry Gingle (or Gingell) lived near the small brook just south of the NLM site. Madison and his wife Artemesia called their farm, Woodmont, which gave its name to nearby Woodmont Avenue. Philadelphia, 1879 <br \/><em>Courtesy of Montgomery County Historical Society<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1921, the Town and Country Club, founded by members of Washington’s German\u2013Jewish community, purchased the home called Winona from the children of Armistead and Martha Peter. The club had reached a membership of 250 and started looking for more spacious quarters outside of the District.<\/p>\n<p>When first purchased, Winona was \u201can old, run-down country house, complete with a tuneless grand piano\u201d in Bethesda, but extensive renovations turned the Georgian brick house into a white columned mansion. Then, just as the Club was beginning to enjoy the post-War prosperity, the Federal Government announced its intention to purchase the property for NIH in 1948. The Club relocated five miles north on Rockville Pike, where it remains today, while the Bethesda property and house were operated as the public Glenbrook Golf Course until 1955. Ground was broken for the National Library of Medicine in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>In 1983\u20134 an <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=KSk3AQAAMAAJ&pg=SA5-PA156&lpg=SA5-PA156&dq=1983+archaeology+at+NIH&source=bl&ots=U3bAvT9Wsu&sig=ACfU3U15vOC6qpMr--k6iEQjMDNFCWip4Q&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj-j5aig9zgAhVl1lkKHWLyAzgQ6AEwCXoECAAQAQ#v=onepage&q=archaeological%20resources&f=false\">archaeological excavation<\/a> just south of the NLM buildings was conducted as a preliminary to construction for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/realestate\/1985\/05\/04\/bethesda-residents-battle-extension-of-woodmont-avenue\/313d3c8c-5cbd-48b5-8563-83193f8bce5b\/?utm_term=.47aaf782a16f\">Woodmont Avenue Extension Project<\/a>. The excavation unearthed what is thought to be a temporary hunting camp for Native Americans traveling across the region, inferred by the site\u2019s proximity to an ancient trail that ran along present-day Wisconsin Ave\/Old Georgetown Road. The dig revealed stone tools from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_archaeological_periods_(North_America)\">Late Archaic through the late Woodlands periods<\/a> (approximately 1000 BCE\u20131600 CE). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/?term=archaeology\">Archaeologists<\/a> identified stone projectile points (for spears and arrows), hammerstones, daggers, and thousands of stone flakes and fragments.<\/p>\n<p>The dig also revealed items dating from the mid-nineteenth century, such as ceramic fragments, glass, bones, and bricks, which may have come from a Gingle family trash pit. The exhibition examined the history of the land that the NLM currently sits on, within the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda. The <a href=\"https:\/\/wayback.archive-it.org\/org-350\/20170216162139\/https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/wewereherefirst\/index.html\">archive of the online version<\/a> is available in the NLM Institutional Archives.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cecelia Vetter, a National Library of Medicine 2018\u20132019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/about\/training\/associate\/\">Associate Fellow<\/a>, adapted this post from the online version of <\/em>We Were Here First<em>.
