The host libraries, museums, and organizations plan and present enriching and engaging programs to connect their communities <\/em><em>with the information in the exhibition and the wide-variety of NLM resources available to the public.\u00a0<\/em><em>This is the first post in a series called \u201cMaking Exhibition Connections,\u201d which invites host venues to share their partnerships, programs, and public engagement experiences with <\/em>Circulating Now<em> readers. What National Library of Medicine traveling exhibition did you host and when did you host it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rita Mccandless:<\/strong> The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is located in the beautiful city of Roanoke, Virginia, nestled at the base of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains.\u00a0 We are a new school with 42 students per class. We opened our doors to our charter class in 2010 and have graduated 5 classes with 100% residency match for all graduates. We hosted the\u00a0<em><a id=\"anch_95\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/exhibition\/aframsurgeons\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Opening Doors: Contemporary African American Academic Surgeons<\/i><\/a><\/em> traveling exhibit from July 19 through August 25, 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CN:<\/strong> Why did you want to host this exhibition?<\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine champions the right of all members of our community to be valued and respected. We actively promote a culture of inclusiveness and mutual respect within our doors and throughout the community we serve.\u00a0 The school received national recognition when awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insightintodiversity.com\/about-the-heed-award\/past-health-professions-recipients\/\">2016 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity<\/a> award from <em>INSIGHT into Diversity<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>When a number of our students and faculty shared with me their experiences of being subjected to hate speech, I felt strongly that we should work within our community to communicate our strong belief in assuring that all of our members feel safe, respected, and welcome.\u00a0 Hosting the <em>Opening Doors<\/em> exhibit was one way to show our support.\u00a0 We also felt this exhibit would show our students how an individual has the power to shape the future and hope that it will inspire them to lead their generation as physician thought leaders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CN:<\/strong> How did you reach out to your community about the exhibition? This made the hosting of this exhibit especially poignant. To see burning torches, hear racial epithets, and witness hateful behavior in 2017 on an American campus was truly nightmarish for many of us, and the events raised grave concerns about the well-being of our community. Many community members touched the images and some wept as they read of the struggles and hardships endured by these early African-American pioneer surgeons.\u00a0 These pioneers are great men and women\u2014it is important to see and know that someone that looks like you can become a surgeon.\u00a0 Our invited high school students were eager to talk to our medical faculty and students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CN:<\/strong> Do you think you were successful in connecting the exhibition topic with your community and why?<\/p>\n<p><strong>RM:<\/strong> Yes!\u00a0 When someone asked me, \u201cWhy now?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t you have scheduled this for Black History Month?\u201d\u00a0 I replied \u201cEvery day is a great day to celebrate the achievements of outstanding African Americans.\u00a0Especially now, in this climate of racial intolerance and hatred.\u201d\u00a0 When I made this statement, I was unaware that I was within earshot of one of my colleagues.\u00a0 He later came to me and said, \u201cThank you, I needed to hear that today.\u00a0 Sometimes I feel discouraged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition connected with our community.\u00a0 At the reception, I was still talking to some of our guests half an hour after the announced end time.\u00a0 These guests walked through the exhibit several times, some reading the accomplishments aloud to a family member.\u00a0 Some of our invited high school students have returned for other events and are participating in our community outreach programs, Within Reach and <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.vtc.vt.edu\/student-life\/student-clubs-and-organizations\/club-mentoring-in-medicine.html\">Mentors in Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"14304\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2018\/05\/22\/making-exhibition-connections-virginia-tech-carilion-school-of-medicine\/margarite_mccandless\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/margarite_mccandless.jpg?fit=900%2C900&ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"900,900\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}\" data-image-title=\"Margarite_McCandless\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/margarite_mccandless.jpg?fit=300%2C300&ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/margarite_mccandless.jpg?fit=840%2C840&ssl=1\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14304\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/margarite_mccandless.jpg?resize=100%2C100&ssl=1\" alt=\"Margarite_McCandless\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/>Rita McCandless is the Head Librarian for the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Health Sciences Library in Roanoke, Virginia.\u00a0 She specializes in research skills training for students and faculty, learner-centered pedagogy, and collection development.\u00a0 Rita is a member of the VTCSOM Council for Diversity & Inclusion, the Medical Library Association, and the International Association of Medical Science Educators.\u00a0 She just completed the AAMC’s Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) program.\u00a0 Articles published are Implementing the Flipped Classroom (2014) and Simple Marketing Techniques and Space Planning to Increase Circulation (2011).
