TOXNET's <a href="http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?TRI">TRI</a> has added TRI 2002; it now includes reporting years 1987-2002. TRI2002 has 93,380 records.
</p>
<p>
TRI is a series of databases that constitute the annually published toxic releases files on the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET). TRI contains information on the annual estimated releases of toxic chemicals to the environment and is based upon data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Mandated by the Superfund legislation, TRI's data covers air, water, land, and underground injection releases, as well as transfers to waste sites, and waste treatment methods and efficiency, as reported by industrial facilities around the United States. TRI also includes data related to source reduction and recycling.
</p>
<ul>
<li>Users can check one or more TRI boxes to select the year(s) to search</li>
<li>The first choice (also the default) is the most recent file year available</li>
<li>This is followed by preceding years, which goes back to 1987, the starting year for collection of this data</li>
<li>A "Select all" option allows all years to be searched simultaneously.</li>

<h3><a name = "gateway">NLM&#174; Gateway Searches the NLM Catalog</a></h3>
<font size="2"><strong>September 16, 2004</strong> [posted]</font>
<p>
In mid-September 2004, <a href="http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd">NLM Gateway</a> introduced access to the NLM Catalog for searching bibliographic data for books, journals, audiovisuals, and other materials.
</p>
<p>
Changing the access to NLM's bibliographic data from LocatorPlus to the NLM Catalog enhances Gateway's searching and retrieval. Enhancements include author searching, automated term mapping, MeSH explosion, searching MeSH terms that are major topics, searching MeSH heading/subheading combinations, searching date ranges, and no limit on the number of items retrieved.
</p>
<p>
In addition, there are changes in the data fields available to the user through the Gateway. Many new fields have been added (e.g., Indexing History), some fields have been merged (e.g. Absorbed, Absorbed in Part, Continues, and Continues in Part are all labeled "Continues"), and two fields have been eliminated (Journal Title Code and Publisher Address).
</p>
<p>
Search results are displayed in the Books/Serials/AVs category in reverse publication date order, latest to earliest. There are two exceptions: the most recent week's additions will appear at the top and records that do not contain a date of publication sort at the bottom.
</p>
<p>
For general information on how to search the NLM Gateway, please see <a href="http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd?Help.x">Gateway Help</a> and the <a href="http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd?FAQ.x">Gateway FAQ</a>.

<p>
The papers of Wilbur Augustus Sawyer and C. Everett Koop are the most recent collections to be added to NLM <a href="http://profiles.nlm.nih.gov/">Profiles in Science</a> Web site, dedicated to the lives and works of prominent 20th century biomedical scientists.
</p>
<p>
Wilbur Augustus Sawyer (1879-1951) was a key figure in preventive medicine and international public health during the first part of the twentieth century. As a public health administrator, he helped expand public health departments and integrate laboratory science into public health work, both in the U.S. and abroad. During his long career with the Rockefeller Foundation's International Health Division (IHD), he served as director of the Rockefeller Foundation public health laboratory service, director of the Rockefeller Foundation Yellow Fever Laboratory (where he developed the first effective yellow fever vaccine), and director of the IHD from 1935 to 1944. Later, as Director of Health for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, he supervised public health work during and after World War II, and was one of the architects of the World Health Organization.
</p>
<p>
C. Everett Koop (b. 1916) is an American pediatric surgeon who during a forty-year medical career pioneered important improvements in the surgical treatment of children. As U.S. Surgeon General from 1981 to 1989, he turned the office into an authoritative platform from which to educate the nation on major public health concerns including smoking, violence, and, most urgently, AIDS.
</p>
<p>
Both collections can be accessed from the Profiles in Science homepage <a href="http://profiles.nlm.nih.gov/">Profiles in Science</a>.

<p>
The Division of Specialized Information Services (SIS) of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) announces a new "Advanced" version of the ChemIDplus chemical search database <a href="http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/chemidheavy.jsp">(http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/chemidheavy.jsp)</a>. ChemIDplus Advanced complements the recently released ChemIDplus Lite <a href="http://chem2.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/chemidlite.jsp">(http://chem2.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/chemidlite.jsp)</a>, which does not allow structure searching.
</p>
<p>
ChemIDplus Advanced replaces the previous structure search page. It provides greater searching options, such as:
</p>
<ul>
<li>Chemical Structure searching using the newest MDL ISISDirect software (by substructure, similarity, and individual structure)</li>
<li>Chemical Structure drawing input by the ChemAxon Marvin Java applet, editor, as well as the MDL Chime and ISISDraw combination
</li>
<li>Numeric searching by biological endpoints, including LD50 and LC50 (the user may specify Test, Species, Route, and Effect; both ranging and exact match are available)</li>
<li>Numeric chemical property search and display on eight fields such as Melting Point and Boiling Point, Water Solubility, LogP, and molecular weight </li>
<li>Tracking of your query history, including display of structures searched, and the capability to re-run or modify old searches during a session. </li>
</ul>
<p>
The Advanced and Lite interfaces run against the same ChemIDplus database as previously, with the addition of new chemical and biological data tables to give property searching capability.
</p>
<p>

<h3><a name = "stats">Statistical Reports On MEDLINE&#174;/PubMed&#174; Baseline Data</a></h3>
<font size="2"><strong>October 22, 2004</strong> [posted]</font>
<p>
NLM is pleased to provide a series of statistical reports run on 2002, 2003, and 2004 baseline MEDLINE/PubMed data with the expectation that researchers mining NLM data, and others, will find them useful.
</p>
<p>
The statistics are based upon the data elements in MEDLINE and include: total citations containing each element; total occurrences of each element; minimum/average/maximum occurrences of each element in a record; and minimum/average/maximum length of a single element occurrence; and other items. A full description of the content and formats of the reports and access to the data is available from <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/med_baseline_statistics.html">http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/med_baseline_statistics.html</a>. NLM expects to make similar reports available after the conclusion of each production year.
</p>
<p>
The baseline database includes all MEDLINE records as well as the quality-assured non-MEDLINE records in PubMed. The PubMed display of the latter group of records contains the status tag [PubMed] next to the PMID (see PubMed Citation Status Subsets in PubMed Help), and the XML version contains the value PubMed-not-MEDLINE in the Status attribute of the MedlineCitation element (see <a href="/bsd/licensee/data_elements_doc.html#medlinecitation">http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/data_elements_doc.html#medlinecitation</a>).
</p>
