library can now register their local document delivery system and their OpenURL-based server with NCBI to direct their users to these systems from PubMed.

<strong>Registering a local document delivery system</strong><br />
|
|
|
|
|
|
PubMed's Document Delivery Service (DDS) allows users to order articles described in PubMed citations from a service and institution of their choice. DDS lets users specify where PubMed will send their order for documents using the Order option of the "Send to" button.
|
|
</p>
|
|
|
|
<p>
|
|
|
|
By default, PubMed will send the order to <a href="/loansomedoc/loansome_home.html">Loansome Doc</a>. Users may change this by choosing another provider who has registered with NCBI. Institutions that want to direct users to their local document delivery system should register their services with NCBI. Implementing an OpenURL-based server in PubMed</strong><br />
|
|
|
|
|
|
PubMed supports OpenURL-based services either through LinkOut, the Entrez feature that handles external linking in PubMed and other Entrez databases, or Outside Tool. With LinkOut, links will appear on a subset of PubMed records and searches in PubMed can be limited to citations with links from a participating library. With Outside Tool, links will appear on all PubMed Records.

Either way, users can see these links as icons on the PubMed abstract display if they activate them before they search.
|

<p>
|
|
There is an evaluation process to determine if a library should use LinkOut or Outside Tool to implement their OpenURL-based server in PubMed.
