PubMed now has an additional, easy-to-remember URL: <a href="http://pubmed.gov">http://pubmed.gov</a>.
PubMed's other url, <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query">http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query</a>, can still be used so it is not necessary to change bookmarks or links.

<h3><a name = "mcm">MEDLINE Citation Maintenance</a></h3>

The ability to correct individual MEDLINE citations for mistakes, e.g., in author names, other typographical errors, published erratum notices, commentary references, was put on hold since November 2000 as NLM worked on the annual maintenance to change the MeSH headings to the 2001 version of MeSH and to load the MEDLINE data into the new Data Creation and Maintenance System (DCMS). Now that NLM has experience with the creation of new records with the new system, we have turned our attention to catching up with editing that needs to be done to MEDLINE citations. A series of small, controlled tests of revised records conducted earlier this Spring were successful and NLM has resumed regular maintenance to MEDLINE citations as of mid-May. The new DCMS has been designed to facilitate the quality assurance of the bibliographic data. We remain committed to producing the MEDLINE database with a high level of quality control. Thanks for your patience as we work our way through the reported errors.

<p>
Reminder: Vendors of MEDLINE data have their own schedules for applying corrections and deleting records once NLM has made these records available to them. Please contact your vendor for further information.

<h3><a name = "profiles">Papers of Nobel Scientists Christian Anfinsen and Marshall Nirenberg added to <em>Profiles in Science</em></a></h3>

The Christian Anfinsen Papers and the Marshall Nirenberg Papers are the fifth and six collections, respectively, to be added to
NLM's <a href = "http://www.profiles.nlm.nih.gov"><em>Profiles in Science</em></a> Web site,
dedicated to the lives and works of prominent 20th century biomedical
scientists.
</p>
<p>
Christian Boehmer Anfinsen, Jr. (1916-1995) was an American biochemist and political activist who shared the 1972 Nobel Prize for work that helped explain the structure and composition of proteins in living cells. NLM is the repository for the Christian B. Anfinsen Papers, which range from 1939 to 1999.
</p>
<p>
Marshall Nirenberg (b. 1927) is an American biochemist who shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on deciphering the genetic code. NLM is the repository for the Marshall Nirenberg Papers, which range from 1931 to 2000. The <em>Profiles in Science</em> Web site shows off a variety of documents and includes materials that span the various phases of Anfinsen's and Nirenberg's lives and careers.
</p>
<p>
The collections contain laboratory notebooks, scientific diaries, research reports, charts, illustrations, published articles, correspondence, unpublished manuscripts, speeches, news clippings, laboratory slides and films, and audiovisual materials.
</p>
<p>
<em>Profiles in Science</em> was launched September 1998 and also includes the
papers of Oswald T. Avery, Joshua Lederberg, Martin Rodbell and Julius Axelrod. It is a
continuing project and NLM plans to announce each new collection as it is
added to the site.

<h3><a name = "pinyin">Conversion from Wade-Giles to Pinyin Romanization Scheme</a></h3>

NLM has begun the conversion from Wade-Giles romanization of bibliographic records to the romanization scheme known as Pinyin. The Pinyin transliteration system for Chinese is replacing the Wade-Giles system which has been used in U.S. libraries for over four decades. For details on how this conversion will impact NLM systems see <a href="/tsd/cataloging/pinyinconversion.html"><em>NLM's Plan for Conversion from Wade-Giles to Pinyin Romanization of Chinese Characters in

The NLM is pleased to announce the online beta version of the National Library of
Medicine Classification, 5th edition, revised 1999. The URL is: <a href="http://wwwcf.nlm.nih.gov/class">http://wwwcf.nlm.nih.gov/class</a>.

This public-access system consists of the NLM Classification Schedules and Index on Web-mounted HTML pages, formatted to resemble the current print version (5th ed., rev., 1999), with hyperlinks:
</p>
<ul>
<li>from the Index headings to the appropriate classification numbers in the Schedules,</li>
<li>from any MeSH term in the Index to full descriptor data in the MeSH Section's <a href="/mesh/MBrowser.html">MeSH Browser</a>,</li>
<li>from cross-references within the Index to the referred term, </li>
<li>between and among numbers within the text of the Schedules,</li>
<li>to the geographic Table G,</li>
<li>and to other appropriate documentation.</li>
</ul>

On June 12, TRI99, the Toxics Release Inventory database for 1999 that is produced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), joined TOXNET. Currently, TRI95-99 are now available for searching on TOXNET at: <a href="http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov">http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov</a>.
