PDF documents require the use of the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader, which can be downloaded from <a href = "http://www.adobe.com/">Adobe's Web site</a> at no charge.

The <em>List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus</em> contains listings for the 3,419 journals indexed for <em>Index Medicus</em> as of December 1999. There are four sections: (1) Alphabetic listing by abbreviated title, followed by full title; (2) Alphabetic listing by full title, followed by abbreviated title; (3) Alphabetic listing by subject field; and (4) Alphabetic listing by country of publication.

The <em>List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus</em> is also available in print, and can be ordered from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office. Details concerning ordering the <em>LJI</em> in print can be found at: [Link no longer available as of June 4, 2018.].

|
The <em>List of Serials Indexed for Online Users</em> provides bibliographic information for serials indexed with the MeSH® vocabulary and cited in MEDLINE®, the backbone of NLM's PubMed information service. Citations for these serials date back as far as 1966 and include serials formerly found in the separate NLM databases HealthSTAR and AIDSLINE®. The current version of the <em>LSIOU</em> contains 9,334 serial titles, including 4,302 titles currently indexed for MEDLINE.

|
<p>
|
|
The data in both the <em>LJI</em> and <em>LSIOU</em> come from NLM's Integrated Library System (ILS), as does the data in NLM's online catalog, LocatorPlus. The following information is displayed in the publications: title, title abbreviation, first and last years of publication, ISSN, Acid-Free notation, NLM Unique Identifier, and preceding and suceeding entries.

|
The NLM Unique Identifier can be used in the new web-based DOCLINE. It is labeled "NLM Unique ID" in LocatorPlus on the HOLDINGS and DETAILS screens, and is in the 035$9 field in the MARC record. The NLM Unique Identifier is either a number with up to 9 digits or an 8 digit number followed by an alphabetic character. The following are examples of NLM Unique Identifiers:

NLM plans to provide both the <em>LJI</em> and the <em>LSIOU</em> in XML format this summer. Users will be able to download the XML data via ftp. NLM will provide a Document Type Definition (DTD) at <a href = "/pubs/libprog.html">http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/libprog.html</a> with instructions on how to download the data from the NLM ftp server.
