<p>
The National Library of Medicine is pleased to announce distribution of CCRIS, ChemIDplus, DIRLINE, Gene-TOX, HSDB, and TOXLINE Special in XML (eXtensible Markup Language) format to NLM's data licensees. NLM will continue to distribute CCRIS, Gene-TOX, and HSDB in the soon-to-be-discontinued ASCII format for several more months as some licensees make their transition to XML. Fact sheets for these databases are available from the NLM Web site.
</p>
<p>
NLM began to distribute MEDLINE in XML in 2000 (see <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/news/medlinedata.html">NLM to use XML and DTD for MEDLINE Data</a>). DTDs (Document Type Definition) have now been written to define the XML format for the databases named above. Instructions for getting the DTDs and sample records in XML format and <a href="/databases/leased.html">general information</a> on leasing NLM databases are available. <a href="/bsd/licensee.html">Announcements</a> dated March 12 and April 8, 2002 to existing licensees about these files, collectively referred to as the TOXNET files, appear on NLM's Web site for licensees.
</p>
<p>
CCRIS, ChemIDplus, Gene-TOX, HSDB, and TOXLINE Special may be searched at no cost at <a href="http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/">http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/</a> and DIRLINE may be searched at no cost at <a href="http://dirline.nlm.nih.gov/">http://dirline.nlm.nih.gov/</a> as well as through the <a href="http://gateway.nlm.nih.gov/gw/Cmd">NLM Gateway</a>.

<h3><a name = "special">Display Order for PubMed Results</a></h3>
<font size="2"><strong>January xx, 2002</strong> [posted]</font>
<p>
When citations are initially added to PubMed they are assigned an Entrez Date. The Entrez Date is the date the citation is added to PubMed and does not change. The Entrez Date does not correspond to the date the article was published (Date of Publication). The order of display for Pubmed results is based on the Entrez Date. The last citations entered into PubMed are the first displayed in the results.
</p>
<p>
When NLM converted the former specialty files (e.g., BIOETHICSLINE) some citations appeared in MEDLINE/PubMed for the very first time. As they were new to PubMed, they were given relatively recent Entrez Dates. (e.g., The BIOETHICSLINE conversion occurred in late October 2001.) These citations will display before citations with earlier Entrez Dates regardless of when the articles were published.
</p>
<p>
Use the PubMed Sort feature (Pub Date) to redisplay the results based on Dates of Publication rather than Entrez Date.
</p>
<p>
NLM will convert the former POPLINE specialty file to MEDLINE/PubMed soon. Citations new to PubMed will have recent Entrez Dates regardless of the date the articles were published.
