disruptions in speech flow, such as pauses, hesitations, and repetitions of syllables, words, or sounds. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, defines stuttering as disturbances in the normal fluency and time patterning of speech that persist over time and involve frequent sound or syllable repetitions. Despite a normally functioning vocal apparatus, individuals with stuttering struggle with smooth and continuous speech delivery. Stuttering is a relatively common condition with a global prevalence of around 80 million and poses a significant challenge for healthcare providers. Thus, clinicians must thoroughly understand its presentation and treatment options to deal with this widespread issue.</p><p>Stuttering can be broadly categorized into developmental, neurogenic, psychogenic, or pharmacological origins, with developmental stuttering being the most prevalent, affecting 5% to 10% of preschoolers. Substantial overlap in clinical features can complicate the identification of underlying etiologies. Adverse reactions from peers and negative self-perceptions may contribute to mental health issues in individuals with stuttering. Effective evaluation and treatment necessitate collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals to understand and manage every aspect of this complex disorder appropriately. This involves crafting comprehensive care customized to each patient's specific concerns and unique needs. This activity reviews the etiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, history, evaluation, and treatment of patients who stutter. This activity also provides healthcare professionals with the necessary tools and knowledge to optimize patient care and enhance treatment outcomes, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach.</p><p>

Family physicians must possess the clinical expertise and diagnostic skills necessary to expedite diagnoses and referrals, especially considering the adverse effects of treatment delays.<a class="bibr" href="#article-150683.r5" rid="article-150683.r5">[5]</a><a class="bibr" href="#article-150683.r79" rid="article-150683.r79">[79]</a> </p><p>Close collaboration with the patient and their family is essential to comprehend their individual needs and circumstances. Speech-language pathologists typically assess and initiate necessary treatments, tailoring management protocols to align with the patient's goals. Due to the potential overlap between stuttering and other speech disorders, as well as the likelihood of concurrent speech issues, referrals to otolaryngologists may be warranted for comprehensive evaluations of the vocal apparatus. Psychiatrists are well-positioned to address the adverse mental health outcomes frequently associated with stuttering. Additionally, the expertise of neurologists is indispensable in managing neurogenic stuttering.   </p><p>Each healthcare professional has an indispensable role within the interprofessional team.
