(NLM) places a high priority on preserving its print collections.

On March 4, 2009, NLM launched a new <a href="//www.nlm.nih.gov/news/journal_donation09.html">NLM Journal Donation Program</a> to ensure that its holdings of journals, indexes, and other serials are as complete as possible. The program encourages libraries to donate volumes that are not already in the NLM collection. For pre-1871 journal volumes, the History of Medicine Division also is interested in replacing deteriorating volumes. If the titles your library owns are recorded in the DOCLINE system, use the Web-based Journal Donation System at <a href="//wwwcf.nlm.nih.gov/jdonate/index.cfm">//wwwcf.nlm.nih.gov/jdonate/index.cfm</a> to find out what NLM needs. A link is provided on the NLM Web site page <a href="//www.nlm.nih.gov/portals/librarians.html"> Especially for Librarians</a> under the "Products and Services" category with the text link of "Journal Donation System."

The system is easy to use — search by title words, phrases, or ISSN. If NLM does not need any volumes of a title, the system notifies your library immediately. If NLM needs volumes, the system displays a list of them, and library staff just clicks on the volumes to be donated. For some titles, the system cannot do an automatic check on which volumes are needed. In these cases, the system will ask for the volumes to be donated, and NLM will send you an e-mail when we determine which volumes we need. You submit your offer electronically from the system. You can print your offer or save it to an Excel file. NLM will send an e-mail to confirm receipt of your offer and to provide instructions on how to have NLM pay for shipping.
