On April 15th he died and an autopsy was performed. Several doctors supported Lincoln in his last hours but no medical intervention could prevent his death and bystanders could only watch and wait.

On April 15, 1865 at 7:22 am, President Abraham Lincoln died from a single gunshot wound to the head. After the President’s death at the Petersen house, his body was placed in a temporary coffin covered with an American flag and transported by hearse to the White House. Lincoln’s body was laid out in a second floor bedroom where two years before, his son Willie had died. It was in this very same room that the autopsy of the President would occur. Among those present were Army surgeons Joseph Janvier Woodward and Edward Curtis who would conduct the autopsy and Surgeon General Joseph Barnes and Dr. Robert King Stone who would preside over the procedure.

<img decoding="async" class="" data-attachment-id="6672" data-orig-file="https://circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/army-surgeon-curtis.png" data-orig-size="716,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Army Surgeon Edward Curtis, M. The ball entered through the occipital bone about one inch left of the median line and just above the left lateral sinus.
