At age 13, Augustus ran a semi-monthly children’s paper called The Mammoth and worked as the paper’s printer, proprietor, and editor for the two years that it ran. At age 15, he was placed in charge of the Hopedale Printing Office. At age 19, he was infected with influenza and succumbed to the disease after nine days. Barrett describes the role Augustus played in publication decades later:

“… if any supervision was necessary, any proof-reading required, Adin Augustus Ballou has been the ever willing spirit to perform that task, and taking control of the medium has with ease and facility employed printers’ signs, (which the medium never learned), which he knew as a practical printer while here.”

The book was finally published by William Richmond in Rogers Park, Illinois in 1890.

Psychopathy, or, Spirit Healing may be the only book “written through mediumship” in the National Library of Medicine’s collection, but it is not the only one of its kind. When searching the library catalog, how can you tell the difference between a book that was written by a person and one by a spirit? Thankfully, the catalog is not like a Halloween corn maze. To aid your search, catalogers create separate headings to differentiate the person from the spirit. We leave the tricks this season to your festive neighbors.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="11117" data-permalink="https://circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/2017/02/14/the-lay-of-the-lonesome-lung-1881/kristastracka/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/kristastracka.png?fit=857%2C1200&ssl=1" data-orig-size="857,1200" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta=\
" data-image-title="kristastracka" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/kristastracka.png?fit=214%2C300&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/kristastracka.png?fit=731%2C1024&ssl=1" class="alignleft wp-image-11117" title="Krista Stracka" src="https://i0.wp.com/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/kristastracka.png?resize=100%2C140&ssl=1" alt="Portrait of Krista Stracka" width="100" height="140" />Krista Stracka is a cataloger in the User Services and Collection Division of the National Library of Medicine.

By Krista Stracka ~ All was quiet in the library on that day in 2019.
