Pumpkin flavored coffee, candles, lotions and even beer are everywhere as soon as the season of Fall arrives. This modern-day trend puts a spotlight on a versatile vegetable that has been around for quite some time. \u00a0Pumpkins are not just used for decorations and flavoring your favorite beverage. This <a href=\"https:\/\/americanindian.si.edu\/nk360\/informational\/native-life-food\">North American winter squash<\/a> has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/168448\/nutrients\">nutritious<\/a> option around the world for hundreds of years.\u00a0 The National Library of Medicine (NLM) holds a number of early works featuring pumpkins including the 1597 book <a href=\"https:\/\/indexcat.nlm.nih.gov\/vivisimo\/cgi-bin\/query-meta?query=The+herball+or+generall+historie+of+plantes&v%3Aproject=indexcat\"><em>The Herbal or Generall Historie of Plantes<\/em><\/a> by John Gerard which features woodcut illustrations of pumpkins.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"840\" data-carousel-extra='{"blog_id":1,"permalink":"https:\\\/\\\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\\\/2023\\\/11\\\/16\\\/searching-for-pumpkins\\\/","likes_blog_id":"52242398"}' itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" > <div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 840px; IndexCat\u2122 is the database version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/hmd\/indexcat\/abouticatalogue.html\"><em>Index-Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon General’s Office<\/em><\/a>, a multi-part printed bibliography that lists items collected between 1880 and 1961. The <a href=\"https:\/\/circulatingnow.nlm.nih.gov\/2016\/11\/09\/150-for-medical-books-180-years-later\/\">Library of the Surgeon General<\/a> later became the National Library of Medicine. Material included in the catalog is dated from the 1400s through 1950. The digitization project began in 1999 and a final digitized copy of the Index-Catalogue was completed in December of 2001. However, when entering a search term, queries are simultaneously run across multiple NLM databases\u2014IndexCat\u2122, eTKeVK2, <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.nlm.nih.gov\/\">LocatorPlus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/\">PubMed<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/\">PubMed Central<\/a>\u2014and displayed in a series of tabs. The eTKeVK2 tab provides citations for medieval Latin and English texts. LocatorPlus provides access to NLM\u2019s entire collection of 1.4 million journals, books, audiovisuals, and other resources and continues to grow.\u00a0 PubMed contains more than 36 million citations and abstracts of biomedical literature, while PubMed Central provides access to selected full text journal articles and backfiles. Each database runs a search within its unique catalog. In each tab you can select items from the results for export in various formats. Clicking on a result in the LocatorPlus, PubMed, or PubMed Central tabs will take you to the item\u2019s record in that database\u2019s main interface.<\/p>\n<p><a second resource from 1898 \u201creport(s) of a case in which pumpkin seed formed the nucleus for a vesical calculus in the male subject.\u201d One of the most common citations returned from the search is the use of pumpkin to treat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/taeniasis\/about\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/taeniasis\/index.html\">Taenia<\/a>, or tapeworm. A 1854 citation noted that \u201cexpulsion of tapeworm was successful by the infusion of pumpkin seed.\u201d The oil extracted from pumpkins was a treatment plan for tapeworm. In one instance, pumpkin pie was identified as a \u201csimple and efficient method of treatment of taenia.\u201d A 1910 chemical examination of pumpkin seed is also cited.<\/p>\n<p>The historical bibliographic references in IndexCat\u2122 provide additional perspectives on the pumpkin, which has become an iconic element of contemporary culture.
