<p><strong>Amanda Dinscore: </strong><a href="https://www.humboldt.edu/">Cal Poly Humboldt</a> is a small state university on the north coast of California, about 300 miles north of San Francisco and 50 miles south of the Oregon border. Approximately 6,000 students attend the university and have the opportunity to live and study in the incredible natural beauty of the area, including our many beaches and ancient redwood forests. However, the county is quite remote and isolated from the rest of California, with limited health and social services to support its population.</p>

<p><strong>AD:</strong> As a librarian that was new to the university, and to the area, I was looking for ways to connect with the programs in my assigned college, including the <a href="https://nursing.humboldt.edu/">RN-BSN Nursing Program</a>, which had been newly reestablished in 2020. From the start, the program directors welcomed me by inviting me to conduct library orientations and workshops, but the opportunity to host an NLM exhibition presented an entirely new way of engaging with their students, faculty, and the local community. We applied for the <a href="https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/makingaworldofdifference/index.html"><em>Making a World of Difference: Stories About Global Health</em></a> exhibition because it had clear connections to the nursing curriculum. Thanks to the willingness of the nursing program directors to try something new, we were able to work together to extend the theme of the exhibition in several ways, including engaging students in creating health-related public service announcements (PSAs) using NLM resources.</p>

<p><strong>AD: </strong>Coincidentally, our library’s press had recently published <a href="https://press.humboldt.edu/BettyChinn"><em>The Gray Bird Sings: The Extraordinary Life of Betty Kwan Chinn</em></a> (ebook freely available via link). Betty and her decades of work caring for Humboldt’s unhoused population are well known here, especially amongst local social service and health care workers. She is considered a local hero and was nationally recognized in 2010 when President Obama awarded her the Presidential Citizens Medal.</p>

<p>Betty’s inspiring life story and tireless work to improve the health and well-being of some of the most disadvantaged members of our community had clear connections to the exhibition theme. With a small university grant, we were able to purchase 350 copies of her biography and distribute them to local nurses and other health care workers. Inside each book, we included stickers with a QR code directing recipients to a <a href="http://libguides.humboldt.edu/NLMGlobalHealth">website</a> where we advertised the exhibition, a library display of local archival materials related to the exhibition theme, and a book discussion that we hosted with Betty Kwan Chinn and the book’s author, Karen Price. On the website, we also shared the PSA videos that the students created and an online form where community members could vote on their favorite video. The top three most popular PSAs were awarded cash prizes, also made possible by the university grant. The PSA project, in which students worked in groups to write, direct, and film their own public service announcements (PSAs) connected to the exhibition theme and using NLM health information, was somewhat complex as it was an assignment with due dates and criteria that needed to be met at certain times. The nursing faculty were essential to the success of the PSA project and created a resource guide in the university learning management system to help everyone keep track of the students’ progress. <strong><br>

We had the traveling exhibition on loan from April 8–May 18, 2024 and planned our local display and events for that period of time. To extend the content of the exhibition, I created a library display highlighting local connections to health advocacy, entitled <em>Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Stories About Global Health in Humboldt County,</em> with profiles of local organizations including United Indian Health Services, Open Door, and the Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation, as well as historical materials on these organizations from our library archives. This display unfortunately had a limited audience due to the campus closure (which began the evening after I put up the display), but it remained up throughout the summer. We also had to find alternate venues for our book discussion and other events. Thankfully, the exhibition banners were easy to take down and set up again. They were on display in three different locations during our loan period!</p>

<p><strong>CN: </strong>Did hosting the exhibition encourage research in or use of your own collection?</p>

<p><strong>AD: </strong>Our plan was to encourage use of our archival collections as described above, but this was cut short due to the campus closure. However, as a librarian new to the area, it was incredibly educational to comb through our collections and discover the history of how some of our local health organizations have developed over time. Many began as grassroots, community driven organizations that have continued to grow and have come to be relied upon in a county that has been historically underserved. It shed a great deal of light on why the <a href="https://nursing.humboldt.edu/">Cal Poly Humboldt Nursing Program</a> is so essential to our community and made me proud to support our local nurses as they continue their education. <strong><br>

<p><strong>AD: </strong>The NLM’s <a href="https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/makingaworldofdifference/index.html">Making a World of Difference: Stories About Global Health</a> traveling exhibition provided our campus with a unique opportunity to make connections between students in our nursing program and organizations and individuals who have long been involved in improving health in Humboldt County. By connecting the themes of this exhibition to the work that they have done, and the work that our student nurses will do as they continue their careers, we were able to help them consider how local actions make a significant impact on global health.</p>
