<p class="pindent">Al-Qaly&#363;b&#299; is known primarily or his treatise on Prophetic medicine, of which several copies are preserved today, though he also wrote a number of other medical and related treatises, many of which are preserved today. Little is known of his life.</p>

<p class="pindent">The <a href="glossary.html#ottoman">Ottoman</a> physician Mu<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7717;</font>ammad ibn Mu<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7717;</font>ammad al-Qaw<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7779;</font>&#363;n&#299; was court physician to Sultan Sulaym&#257;n I, who ruled from 1520 to 1566, and Selim II, who ruled from 1566 to 1574. Al-Qaw<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7779;</font>&#363;n&#299; composed a treatise on the treatment of hemorrhoids addressed to travelers; NLM has a copy of this tract (<a href="ther8.html#a92item3">MS A 92 item 3</a>). He also wrote a book on poisons and their antidotes and a number of other treatises.</p>

<p class="pindent">Fat<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7717;</font> al-D&#299;n al-Qays&#299; composed his ophthalmological manual in Cairo and dedicated it to the Egyptian <a href="glossary.html#ayyubid">Ayyubid</a> ruler al-Malik al-Salih II Najm al-Dyn Ayyub, who ruled from 1240 to 1249. This treatise dealt with the anatomy and physiology of the eye as well as the causes, symptoms of treatment of 125 eye conditions, some apparently described for the first time. NLM has one of the 14 recorded copies of this treatise.</p>

<p class="pindent">Born in the Persian town of Qazw&#299;n, Zakar&#299;y&#257;&#8217; ibn Mu<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7717;</font>ammad al-Qazw&#299;n&#299; served as legal expert and judge (<em>qadi</em>) in several different localities in Persia and Iraq. He travelled in Mesopotamia, Syria and Iraq and finally entered the circle patronized by the governor of Baghdad, &#8216;Ata-Malik Juwayni (<a href="glossary.html#d">d.</a> 1283/682). It was to the latter that al-Qazw&#299;n&#299; dedicated his Arabic-language cosmography titled <a href="natural_hist3.html"><em>&#8216;Aj&#257;&#8217;ib al-makhl&#363;q&#257;t wa-ghar&#257;&#8217;ib al-mawj&#363;d&#257;t</em></a> (<em>Marvels of Things Created and Miraculous Aspects of Things Existing</em>). This treatise, frequently illustrated, was immensely popular and is preserved today in many copies, and it was translated into Persian and Turkish. Al-Qazw&#299;n&#299; was also well-known for his geographical dictionary, <em>Athat al-bilad wa-akhbar al-&#8216;ibad</em> (<em>Monument of Places and History of God's Bondsmen</em>). Both of these treatises reflect extensive reading and learning in a wide range of disciplines.</p>

<p class="pindent">Qiw&#257;m al-D&#299;n Mu<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7717;</font>ammad al-<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7716;</font>asan&#299; was a scholar who is known to have been working in the city of Qazw&#299;n in Persia in the year 1694/1106 H. NLM has in its collections a rare copy of a collection of five Arabic poems concerned with medicine, astronomy, arithmetic, calligraphy, and proper conduct. These five poems were collectively titled <em>al-Khamsah al-Qazw&#299;n&#299;yah</em> (<em>The Five Qazwini</em> [poems]), a reference to the fact that the author worked in Qazw&#299;n. The copy at NLM was copied by a professional <a href="glossary.html#scribe">scribe</a> for the author, whose stamps are in the volume, next to a statement that he corrected the volume in the year 1132 [= 1719-1720]. Thus we learn from this volume that Qiw&#257;m al-D&#299;n Mu<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7717;</font>ammad al-<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7716;</font>asan&#299; was still working in 1719.</p>

<p class="pindent">Ab&#363; Man<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7779;</font>&#363;r al-<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7716;</font>asan ibn N&#363;<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7717;</font> al-Qumr&#299; was the teacher of Ibn S&#299;n&#257; (<a href="bioA.html#avicenna">Avicenna</a>). He was court physician to the <a href="glossary.html#samanid">Samanid</a> prince al-Man<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7779;</font>&#363;r, to whom he dedicated the only treatise by him that is preserved, the <a href="E7.html"><em>Kit&#257;b al-Ghin&#225; wa-al-mun&#225;</em></a> (<em>The Book of Wealth and Wishes</em>), which was also known as <em>al-Shams&#299;yah al-Man<font face= "Arial Unicode MS">&#7779;</font>&#363;r&#299;yah</em> (<em>The Mansurian Sunshade</em>) after its dedicatee. Little else in known of his life except that he died shortly after 990/380 H.</p>
