<p class="regulartext">The National Institutes of Health is continuing to make efforts to support grantees affected in various ways by this large scale natural disaster. The NIH has made several announcements for grantees affected by Hurricane Katrina (<a href="http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-05-074.html">http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-05-074.html</a>), including one directed to investigators submitting applications from institutions damaged by the hurricane (<a href="http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-05-072.html">http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-05-072.html</a>). This notice is directed to investigators from other institutions who are involved in the recovery efforts. </p>

<p class="regulartext">The process of assistance and recovery from the widespread damage and health problems cause by Hurricane Katrina will involve many members of the biomedical and behavioral research community. Many individuals are now volunteering to help in the relief and rebuilding efforts. The NIH will extend consideration for late grant application submission to those directly involved with hurricane relief efforts. Principal Investigators who are submitting an application late because of their immediate involvement in hurricane recovery efforts should include a cover letter that documents the time period of their direct involvement in assistance for hurricane relief. NIH will endeavor to extend this consideration for the time period of the hurricane assistance; however, the timing of the review meetings must also be considered. Therefore, applications due October 1 must be received by October 25 and those due November 1 by November 25. </p>

<p class="regulartext">Principal Investigators submitting applications for RFAs that have special receipt dates should contact the NIH institute or center that issued the RFA to discuss the opportunity for a delayed submission; this may not be possible in some cases. </p>
|
|
<p class="regulartext">Please note it is not necessary to get permission in advance and that this is limited to the involvement of Principal Investigators only, not other participants in the grant application. </p>
