Whether you’re studying insect genetics, developmental biology, or comparative genomics, the expanded ortholog data opens up new possibilities for research. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Check out our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncbiinsights.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2024\/05\/21\/ortholog-groups-2-million-insect-genes\/?utm_source=ncbi_insights&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=refseq-ortholog-expansion-20241030\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">previous blog<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to learn how to access the orthologs using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/datasets\/?utm_source=ncbi_insights&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=refseq-ortholog-expansion-20241030\">NCBI Datasets<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What\u2019s new?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335557856":16777215,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">New species<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: Non-insect arthropod species are now included to identify one-to-one orthologs with <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Drosophila <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(fruit fly), enriching the existing dataset with genes from over 45 additional species including spiders and ticks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335557856":16777215,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Expanded Ortholog Data for <em>Hymenoptera<\/em><\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: We have further enriched the insect dataset with over 250,000 one-to-one orthologs found within the order <em>Hymenoptera<\/em> (ants, wasps, and bees), identified by comparison to the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Apis mellifera <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(honeybee) gene set, supplementing the more broadly conserved orthologs shared with <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Drosophila.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335557856":16777215,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Example:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335557856":16777215,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/406093\/ortholog?scope=83321&utm_source=ncbi_insights&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=refseq-ortholog-expansion-20241030\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">apisimin<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> genes of honeybees encode a peptide component of royal jelly, which fulfills the nutritional needs of the queen bee. Because these genes are specific to honeybees, they were absent from ortholog datasets that used fruit flies as a reference. However, with the recent expansion of ortholog data incorporating honeybees as an additional reference, five apisimin genes in different <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Apis <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">species have now been identified as orthologs.
