||
<p>The NIH HEAL Initiative® convened the third annual meeting of more than 400 NIH HEAL Initiative awardees, federal officials, people with lived experience, and other stakeholders to share research findings, explore trends and shared interests, and identify opportunities to advance the goals of the initiative.</p>
|
||
|
||
<p>This meeting brought together researchers from around the country who are taking on the pain and opioid crises from all angles. These researchers study <a href="https://heal.nih.gov/research">a broad range of topics</a>, such as innovative technology-based therapies for pain management; community-based integrated solutions for prevention, overdose, and medication-based treatment for opioid use disorder; and a variety of new approaches for managing pain.</p>

<li>The pain and opioid use disorder research communities must work together to address shared risk factors and experiences, identify common intervention targets, and integrate treatment.</li>

<li>To enhance study recruitment as well as treatment accessibility and acceptance, community engagement is essential, as is building trust between researchers and the community using targeted approaches.</li>
|
||
<li>More efforts are necessary to reduce stigma associated with pain, opioid use disorder, and medications for opioid use disorder at multiple levels, especially among healthcare providers.</li>
|
||
<li>HEAL research needs to address changing substance use patterns, including polysubstance use and increased presence of fentanyl in other drugs, as well as changes in populations at risk.</li>
|
||
<li>Better data collection and enhanced data sharing are essential to promote new knowledge and inform responses to the pain and opioid crises.</li>
|
||
<li>Multi-tiered approaches are necessary to address all aspects of the opioid crisis, including improved pain management, prevention of opioid use disorder and overdose, treatment of opioid use disorder and overdose, recovery support, and disruption of drug supplies.</li>
