NCBI now allows developers to use the E-utilities to access a collection of BLAST databases. Esearch can now search this database (db=blastdbinfo) using a variety of terms, and Esummary can retrieve metadata and paths to these databases for use in the BLAST URL API or standalone BLAST. We will be adding additional documentation to the E-utility manual soon (eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
