"SERIOUS EPIDEMIC AT NOME NECESSITATES RAPID TRANSPORTATION OF ANTITOXIN FROM NENANA TO NOME STOP"—Telegram to Alaska Territorial Governor Scott C. Bone, January 26, 1925
To the Rescue
Unlike the Internet, the telegraph only had a limited range of medical applications. It required trained operators and a cable network that was not directly accessible to the public, and it lacked the capacity to send or store large amounts of information. Nevertheless, the telegraph did play an important role in transmitting messages that served the public health, conveyed important personal information, aided the practice of medicine, and sometimes saved lives. |
