"The laboratories of America have now become part of our first line of defense."—Secretary of War Robert Patterson, October 1945
National Security at Stake
The first efforts to link computers were born of Cold War anxiety. After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into space in 1957, the United States invested heavily in defense research, fearing that the USSR could now launch rockets armed with nuclear warheads. To warn of a missile attack, computers had to be able to receive information from remote locations and display it immediately, in "real time." Computers needed to be interactive and interconnected. |
