The National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health, is pleased to announce the election of Michael F. Chiang, M.D., a distinguished pediatric ophthalmologist and board-certified clinical informatician, to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).
Chiang's exceptional contributions to the field of ophthalmology and his pioneering work in clinical informatics have earned him this well-deserved recognition. He has served as NEI’s director since November 2020.
Chiang is renowned for his dedication to advancing vision research and patient care. His expertise spans a wide spectrum, with notable achievements in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), telehealth, artificial intelligence, electronic health records, and data science. He is one of 90 new members elected in 2023.
Originally established as the Institute of Medicine in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine actively addresses critical issues in health, science, medicine, and related policy. It serves as a catalyst for positive action across various sectors, working in concert with the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering to provide impartial analysis and guidance to the nation.
“This is an enormous privilege for me. I am excited about contributing to critical National Academy of Medicine tasks such as serving as an independent scientific advisor to the U.S. government toward advancing the health of the American people as well as global populations,” said Dr. Chiang about his election.
New members of the Academy are chosen by current members through a meticulous process that acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to health science, patient care, and public health.

NEI also congratulates Eric Green, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, who was also elected this year. Green's groundbreaking work has played a pivotal role in advancing human genomics with profound implications for medicine.
