Health Specialist

The mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. NEI is seeking an exceptional candidate for a Health Specialist position in the Division of Extramural Science Programs (DESP). The division supports a broad range of basic, translational, and clinical research as well as career development programs in vision science.

Major Duties: The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for assisting Program Officers (PO) and NEI leadership in managing and analysis of grant portfolios in both basic and clinical areas. The duties would include assisting in the management of individual grants including evaluation of progress reports, budgets, compliance with data and resource sharing, communications with investigators, and any other issues related to the programmatic oversight of grants and cooperative agreements. The candidate will play a significant role in the evaluation of research portfolios, helping to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses to guide the overall direction of NEI priorities. The candidate would participate and assist in all aspects of PO duties including serving on NEI and NIH committees. For NEI leadership, duties include but are not limited to portfolio analysis, drafting of funding opportunities, and coordinating workshops and other meetings. This position involves extensive interaction with extramural grantees and NIH staff.

Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. It is preferred that candidates hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field relevant to biomedical research. Strong organizational, analytical, oral, written and communication skills are required. Experience with the NIH grant system is preferable but not required.
