LinkOut XML File Validator

The LinkOut File Validator validates the XML files that full text and database and other LinkOut providers supply to NCBI. These XML files must be valid against the NCBI LinkOut DTD. Learn more about the LinkOut XML file specifications.

Libraries that use Outside Tool with their linking service do not need to upload or validate any XML files. Learn more about Outside Tool for Libraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why does the LinkOut Validator display so many errors when I simply missed an element tag?

The Validator uses strict syntax. Errors in one part of a file will affect how the program validates the rest of the file. The best approach to fixing a file is to check the lines around where an error occurred, fix the syntax errors, then submit the file for validation again.

  • Why doesn't the Validator catch my URL errors and invalid queries?

The Validator will only find errors in XML syntax, e.g. missing element tags, spelling errors in elements, elements in the wrong order. It does not validate whether the URLs in your XML files are correct or if your query is a valid NCBI database query.

  • My organization is an approved LinkOut data provider, how can I add or update my organization's LinkOut XML files?

Full Text providers may transfer new versions of current LinkOut XML files or add new LinkOut XML data at any time. Validate all files before uploading the files to your assigned FTP account. If you cannot find your FTP login information, write to linkout@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
