Welcome to a virtual tour of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) collection. Today, in honor of our Olympic athletes and professional and amateur athletes everywhere, we are featuring collection items and resources relating to sports and health.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These collection materials document the history of sports medicine and the different ways sports activities impact health. They explore elements of anatomy and physiology, injury, healthy exercise, and competition. We welcome <\/span>you to add your own favorites or ask us <\/span>questions. Use the comment feature below to share your thoughts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n NLM Digital Collections<\/a> is the National Library of Medicine’s free online repository of biomedical resources including books, manuscripts, and still and moving images.<\/p>\n Images from the History of Medicine<\/a> (IHM), available in NLM Digital Collections<\/a>, is a digitized set of historical images selected from the collection.\u00a0 Here are a few images that are related to elements of sports and health.<\/p>\n Explore many more related images in NLM Digital Collections under these search terms:<\/p>\n Olympics<\/a> | Sports<\/a> | Injury<\/a>| Competition<\/a> | Physiology<\/a><\/p>\n This group of materials consists of selected digitized English-language monographs which demonstrate the evolution of American medicine from colonial frontier outposts of the 17th century to research hospitals of the 20th century. Here are a few items relating to sports and health:<\/p>\n This group of materials consists of digitized archive documents and videos created by NLM, such as technical notes, bibliographies, reports, and lectures.<\/p>\n Produced during the Great Depression, the 1935 film Life of a Healthy Child<\/a> presents exercise and athletics as essential to the development of robust human beings capable of leadership. Today’s children, we’re told, are the “future rulers of a very troubled world.” They must prepare for such responsibility. Maintain good hygiene and posture, eat nutritious food, and perhaps most importantly, engage in physical activity and sport. The narrator advises:<\/p>\n “Every child should have plenty of outdoor exercise for a healthy body and a contented mind…Skipping the rope calls for a quick eye and nimble feet, while simple gymnastics develop muscular skill.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Engaging in careful recreation is the theme of Midsummer’s Nightmare<\/a><\/span>, which illustrates the perils of water sports when participants are unprepared. Swimming alone or taking your body beyond its capacity can result in injury or death. “A sudden illness, exhaustion, a cramp, a strong wave, may render any swimmer helpless…”<\/p>\n
