Statement by David E. Rogers, M.D.
Vice Chairman. National Commission on AIDS
On the Resignation of Magic Johnson from the NBA
This is a vivid example of the cruel discrimination
suffered by people with HIV disease. When even a person
as beloved and respected as Magic Johnson feels he must
leave his life’s work due to people’s unwarranted fears,
you can guess what happens to the tens of thousands of
other people with HIV working in all walks of life.
Regrettably, this may lead people to hide their infection
from those who should be their greatest source of
compassion and support, or to not get tested for HIV.
Both of these undermine our efforts to stem the toll of
the epidemic.
Tragically, our public education efforts concerning
the relative risk of HIV transmission have clearly thus
far failed; we need a greater national investment in
education.
