Program Officer, Collaborative Clinical Research (CCR) Program

The mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. NEI is seeking an exceptional candidate for a Program Director (Health Science Administrator) position in the Collaborative Clinical Research Program (CCR) in the Division of Extramural Science Programs (DESP). The CCR administers a portfolio of extramural research in vision-related clinical studies to generate new knowledge to improve quality of care outcomes, reduce healthcare delivery costs, reduce medical errors, and improve patient safety.

Major Duties: As a Health Scientist Administrator (Program Director/ Program Officer), key responsibilities will involve assessing the importance of emerging trends and fields within the scientific community, evaluating research competencies in the field, and ensuring that both the quantity and quality of research align with the NEI's mission and goals. The successful candidate will organize and lead discussions with clinical and/or epidemiology/population researchers to develop a comprehensive agenda for the assigned program area. This includes coordinating support mechanisms to maintain a well-balanced program and making recommendations on program direction, priorities, and funding levels. Additionally, the candidate will conduct scientific and administrative reviews of applications and proposals from a programmatic perspective, providing insights into their alignment with the NEI’s objectives. The candidate will also prepare materials for and participate in advisory and review committee meetings, addressing any concerns related to specific applications or proposals in the assigned program area. Finally, the candidate will consult with grantees during the application or proposal preparation process, offering guidance on program-related matters while monitoring scientific progress, program relevance, and overall merit.

Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. It is preferred that candidates hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field relevant to biomedical research. Strong organizational, analytical, oral, written and communication skills are required. Experience with the NIH grant system is preferable but not required.
