Position:
The intramural program of the National Eye Institute invites applications for a position as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Section on Perception, Cognition and Action supervised by Senior Investigator Dr. Bevil Conway, part of the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research (LSR). Candidates may also have the opportunity to be co-advised by Professor Dan Butts (University of Maryland) or Chris Baker (Senior Investigator NIMH) on joint projects. The position is funded for up to five years, pending annual review.
You would work with other members of the team to plan, conduct, and disseminate original neurophysiological and behavioral research on the mechanisms of vision and visual cognition. Depending on your interests, you could work on several different projects, and would be encouraged to develop independent projects, related to how retinal signals are transformed through the visual system into perceptions and thoughts that drive behavior. Four major thrusts of the lab are: 1. To determine the behavioral and neural mechanisms that support concept acquisition and deployment; 2. To determine quantitative relationships of macaque and human brains (joint with Baker); 3. To determine the causal link between neural activity and color perception; and 4. To determine the mechanisms that support vision at the center of gaze (joint with Butts). The lab uses cutting-edge neurophysiological recording, eye-tracking, imaging (MEG, fMRI), and computational approaches.

Stipend:
The successful candidate will receive a stipend commensurate with experience based on the NIH standard.

Qualifications:
You should have a PhD or MD degree, with training in biology, neuroscience, computer science, psychology, machine vision, cognitive science, or related fields, and success in original research. Candidates should have expertise in at least two of the following areas: neural recording; analysis of neurophysiological data; functional MRI; computational modeling; color science (colorimetry, image analysis); psychophysics; computer programming (Matlab, Java script, Java, UNIX, python); or animal behavior. We also seek candidates with outstanding interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication abilities, experience with mentoring, and who are committed to a healthy diverse research environment.
