Deputy Director, Division of Extramural Science Programs

The mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) is to eliminate vision loss and improve quality of life through vision research. NEI is seeking an exceptional candidate for a Deputy Director position in the Division of Extramural Science Programs (DESP). The division supports a broad range of basic, translational, and clinical research as well as career development programs in vision science.

Major Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the DESP Director in managing and coordinating all functions of the division, while maintaining a small scientific portfolio in DESP. In collaboration with the DESP Director and NEI leadership, the role involves setting scientific priorities, making programmatic decisions, and developing science policy for DESP activities. This includes overseeing the development of new funding opportunities such as RFAs, PARs, and NOSIs to advance NEI research priorities, while adhering to deadlines for their implementation. The role also requires participation in program planning and policy development to further the NEI mission. Additionally, the individual will assist to develop extramural funding plans aligned with the NEI strategic plan and manage the DESP budget, including staff travel, training, and equipment requests. As a supervisor for some DESP Program staff, the candidate will oversee performance management, approve timecards, and leave requests, and ensure that all mandatory training is completed by deadlines. Serving on trans-NIH committees in a senior leadership capacity as needed, the individual will also work with the DESP Director to ensure appropriate portfolio balance across staff, identify staffing needs, and assist in recruitment. Mentorship of new program staff is a key component, ensuring proper training on NEI and NIH processes and policies.

Candidate Qualifications: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. The ideal candidate should have a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent). Senior-level research experience or knowledge of research programs is also needed. Strong organizational, analytical, oral, written and communication skills are required. Experience with the NIH grant system is required.
