<a name="head4"></a><h2>Announcing a New, Enhanced HCUPnet</h2>
<p>If you are a policymaker who needs access to hospital statistics, point your Web browser to the new and expanded HCUPnet (<a href="http://hcupnet.ahrq.gov/">http://hcupnet.ahrq.gov/</a>), a free, interactive online service for
identifying, tracking, analyzing, and comparing statistics on hospital care collected by the <a href="https://www.ahrq.gov/data/hcup/">Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project</a>. National and regional data in HCUPnet are derived from the 1997 HCUP <a href="http://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/nisoverview.jsp">Nationwide Inpatient Sample</a>, the largest all-payer inpatient database in the United States.</p>
<p>Who should investigate HCUPnet:</p>
<ul>
<li>Federal and State policymakers.</li>
<li>Health policy analysts.</li>
<li>Health program administrators.</li>
<li>Hospital and health plan analysts.</li>
<li>Health services researchers.</li></ul>
<p>Key features of HCUPnet include:</p>
<ul><li>Choice of data from a National sample or participating State database (as of February 2000,
participating States are Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, New
Jersey, Oregon, South Carolina, and Washington).</li>
<li>Searching on user-defined subset of inpatient stays (all stays, principal diagnoses, or principal procedures).</li>
<li>Selection of desired outcomes and measures.</li>
<li>Selection of one or a comparison of two or more patient groups by age, sex, insurance status, or median income of patient's ZIP code.</li>
<li>Analysis of one or comparison of two or more hospital types by ownership, teaching status,
location bedsize, and geographic region.</li></ul>
<p>Possible uses of HCUPnet include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Profile hospital utilization patterns of Medicaid clients.</li>
<li>Determine the percentage of births not covered by public or private insurance and whether
outcomes are different for uninsured and insured births.</li>
<li>Track the frequency of hospitalizations for certain rare conditions, such as sickle cell anemia, or uncommon procedures, such as organ transplants.</li>
<li>Compare the diffusion of new hospital technologies across teaching versus nonteaching
hospitals or across States.</li></ul>
