Table 10. Components of National Disaster Medical Assistance System

Team Type Composition Deployment Availability

DMAT

Type I DMAT

105 or more deployable members with 12 physicians, and at least 3 physician assistants (PAs) or Nurse Practitioners (NPs), 3 RNs, 3 pharmacists and 3 paramedics.

Ready within 6 hours of activation.

9 teams

Type II DMAT

90 or more deployable members with at least 9 physicians and at least 3 PAs or NPs, 3 RNs, 3 pharmacists and 3 paramedics.

Ready within 12 hours of activation.

12 teams 

Type III DMAT

50 or more deployable members with at least 6 physicians, and at least 2 PAs or NPs, 2 RNs, 2 pharmacists, and 2 paramedics.

Deployable locally for intrastate emergency situations ready within 24 hours

18 teams

Type IV DMAT

Teams under development.

May supplement other teams as necessary to allow members to obtain experience.

16 teams

National Pharmacy Response Teams

Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and students of pharmacy organized in each of the ten Department of Homeland Security Regions used to assist in chemoprophylaxis or vaccinations or in another scenario requiring many pharmacists.

Deployed in the event of a declared national disaster

10 teams

National Nurse Response Teams

Teams of registered nurses who could be called upon to assist in chemoprophylaxis or vaccinations. In the future will be two large regional teams (eastern and western regions of the country)

Team size varies from 5-30 members. Deployed in the event of a declared national disaster
